Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is located at the end of the tour of the Vatican Museums in Rome and is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world.
Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere had the ancient Magna Chapel restored between 1477 and 1480 and the Chapel was dedicated to Maria Assunta in Cielo.
Inside the Sistine Chapel the conclave elects the new Pope; baptisms and other official papal ceremonies are celebrated (in the past some papal coronations were celebrated here).
It is possible to admire real works of art by Michelangelo Buonarroti, which cover the ceiling with the famous Creation of Adam and the wall with the Last Judgement.
Michelangelo was not the only one to paint frescoes in the Sistine Chapel; other artists also worked there, including Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Pietro Perugino, assisted by their respective workshops and other collaborators such as Bartolomeo della Gatta, Biagio di Antonio and Luca Signorelli.
